Don’t Flush your Baby Wipes down the toilet!

Some baby products manufacturers claims that their baby wipes are “flushable” but are they really?

Unfortunately, no. Flushable wipes aren't as flushable as advertised.

Manufacturers of baby wipes may sometimes market their products as flushable, but the truth cannot be farther than this. They may "disappear" from your toilet bowl but they remain somewhere in the system. Toilet paper is designed to disintegrate in our pipes and sewage systems, but flushable wipes are not. They’re typically made with synthetic materials, plastics or polyester, that won't break down.

As a result, while you can't see them in the toilet bowl, they are likely to become stuck somewhere in the pipes and accumulate to the point where water and waste cannot pass through and eventually requires you to engage a plumber to fix the clogged pipe or toilet bowl.

A recent study from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, tested 28 wipes from leading brands. Not a single flushable wipe passed that test!

Now even if it doesn’t choke up your household plumbing, what happens next?

According to Singapore National Water Agency (PUB) Wet wipes, condoms, sanitary pads and hardened grease are some of the most common things we find in choked sewers, along with other everyday items such as shavers and toothpaste tubes. All these items do not belong in our sewers and will choke our sewage system. Choked sewers can cause public health issues and disrupt the flow of used water.

In 2017 alone, PUB attended to 432 sewer choke cases causing service disruptions, and that’s excluding the scheduled cleaning and maintenance that is done regularly. 73 per cent of sewer blockages happened because of hardened grease and rags (e.g., Wet wipes, Sanitary pads etc) being flushed down the sink and gutter traps. Wet wipes, Serviettes and paper towels, which are thicker than toilet paper, clog the system and should not be flushed.
